Police surrounded a Verna car with Punjab registration near Durga Mandir in Sriganganagar on Thursday, recovering a country-made .315 bore pistol and one cartridge from the passengers. Simultaneously, two youths from Amritsar, in a Scorpio near the Sadhuwali check post on the Sriganganagar-Abohar road, were arrested for disturbing the peace, and their vehicle was seized under the Motor Vehicle Act for lacking proper documents.The arrested youth include Harkirat Singh (28) resident of Ganda Colony, Gurprakash Singh (23) of Gurnam Nagar, Manpreet Singh (28) of Pratap Nagar in Amritsar and Akashdeep Singh (22) of Banwali Sadulshehar.According to Sub Inspector Rameshwar Lal Bishnoi, they had come to Sriganganagar to buy an old Scorpio. After finalising the deal, they were seen driving around in both vehicles. Acting on a tip-off about possible illegal weapons, police stopped Gurprakash and Manpreet at the Sadhuwali check post. During interrogation, they revealed the weapons were in the Verna. The police pursued the vehicle and surrounded it near Durga Mandir. When the occupants refused to surrender, officers broke the car’s glass to apprehend them.Harkirat Singh and Akashdeep Singh have been charged under the Arms Act, while Gurprakash and Manpreet are detained under Section 170 of the Indian Civil Defense Code.Meanwhile, police arrested a suspect, identified as Happy Singh (21) of Jalalabad district Fazilka after recovering about 21 grams of heroin. It was revealed that he had borrowed a Scorpio car from someone after arranging heroin from Kulwant Singh of Jalalabad. The Scorpio car has also been seized.
