Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday accused the Modi government of “recycling hollow promises of Viksit Bharat” while systematically dismantling welfare measures meant for the poor.In a post on X, Kharge said, “Every year, the Union Cabinet clears the President’s Address like a recycled ritual, reusing the same set of claims without truth or accountability.”Questioning the government’s “development” narrative, Kharge alleged that despite lofty speeches on growth and progress, the “anti-poor, pro-crony” Modi government had “mercilessly dismantled the MGNREGA”, which guarantees the Right to Work. He said the dilution of the scheme had deprived crores of workers of their only source of livelihood.“The slogan of Viksit Bharat is repeated loudly, yet it carries no clear goals, no timelines and no measurable outcomes,” Kharge alleged.The Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition further asked what kind of Viksit Bharat was this, where the “poor were denied the means to survive and dignity was sacrificed for slogans”?His remarks came after the Budget session of Parliament commenced on Wednesday with the President’s address to both the Houses.Earlier in the day, a meeting of the floor leaders of the INDIA Bloc was held under the leadership of Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. Important issues related to Budget session of Parliament were discussed in the meeting.Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress leaders KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh and Naseer Hussain, DMK leader Tiruchi Siva, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Arvind Sawant, Kamal Hasan and others attended the meeting.On Tuesday, the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chaired by CPP chief Sonia Gandhi, had decided to corner the government on various issues including the replacing of the MGNREGA with VB-G RAM G and the special intensive revision exercise of electoral rolls underway in several states.The party said, “The biggest issues that have come up are MGNREGA and the SIR. We had an in-depth discussion on both”.The party alleged that SIR exercise has created widespread confusion and resulted in the disenfranchisement of voters. “This process has snatched away the voting rights of people. The Congress will raise this issue in a big way in Parliament. The party will demand complete roll back of the SIR.The Congress also plans to flag environmental concerns, including issues related to the Aravalli range, the Great Nicobar project and rising pollution levels.Statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh will be another major focus. Accusing the government of indifference, the party said that despite repeated assurances, the Centre had failed to fulfil its promise of restoring statehood. “The government has gone back on its word to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
