The I-League, which is the second tier competition of Indian football, is likely to be rebranded as Indian Football League. The proposal, which has been taken in consultations with various clubs, will also mean that club representatives will be part of the management committee as well as the governing council as a new governance model. All India Football Federation (AIFF) M Satyanarayan informed the media about this change in governance model on Wednesday. “The clubs and AIFF representatives had been meeting to restart the league and we came to an understanding late last night. The I-League will be rebranded as the Indian Football League,” Satyanarayan said.“Clubs representatives will also be part of the governing council and management committee that will decide everything about the league and the proposal has been sent for approval to the executive committee of the AIFF. Once that comes we will release the fixtures list.Tentatively the league is scheduled to start from February 21 with clubs first playing a round robin league and then going into play offs to decide which amongst them gets promoted and relegated called as the championship or relegation rounds.Shillong Lajong FC owner Larsing Sawyan called it a significant change in Indian football. “We had been in deliberations for some time now. This model where clubs are involved in decision making is a significant shift. The English premier league and other European leagues have adopted this model and look where they have reached. It is a small step but one I hope will bring a big change in times to come,” Sawyan said. The clubs have been given time till February 2 to deposit their participation fee post which the fixtures will be announced.“We are in discussion to get a broadcast partner and a production partner for the league. Once we get the approval we will announce the fixtures list and only then a final decision on broadcast partners will happen,” AIFF deputy secretary general said.
