The Congress on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of surrendering India’s national, economic and agricultural interests following the late-night announcement of an India–US trade deal by US President Donald Trump, alleging that the move was timed to deflect attention from uncomfortable questions raised in Parliament on China and national security. The Opposition said the government was attempting to manage headlines even as concerns mounted over concessions made to Washington, particularly at the cost of Indian farmers and India’s strategic standing.Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed to President Trump’s post on Truth Social, in which the US President claimed that the trade deal was announced and brought into effect immediately at Mr Modi’s request. Jairam said the timing of the announcement was no coincidence, coming just hours after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of China in the Lok Sabha.According to him, the government’s handling of China had already raised serious questions and farmers were now beginning to see through what he described as its willingness to compromise their interests.Recalling the trajectory of India–US ties, Jairam said that almost exactly a year ago, the PM had travelled to the White House to meet President Trump after his re-election, projecting warmth and personal rapport. At the time, bilateral relations appeared strong and negotiations on a trade agreement were initiated soon after. However, he said the relationship began to unravel following Trump’s announcement on May 10, 2025, halting Operation Sindoor. He said that matters worsened further when Trump publicly embraced Pakistan and its Army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir.Referring to the limited information shared so far by the US President, he alleged that India had once again given ground, repeating what he described as a pattern of concessions seen in May 2025. He said the Prime Minister had appeased President Trump and that India’s position had weakened as a result. With Parliament in session, the Congress demanded transparency. The Congress MP said the full texts of both the EU and US trade deals must be laid on the Table of both Houses and debated.Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed these concerns, citing statements from the US side claiming that American farm products would now be sold in the Indian market, bringing gains to rural America. She said Indian farmers were entitled to clarity on the terms of the agreement.
