Rahul Gandhi’s “traitor” jibe at minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has led to a massive political slugfest with the ruling BJP demanding action against the former for insulting a proud Sikh.Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri led the attack against Gandhi and said the way Gandhi addressed a parliamentarian and respected Sikh leader Ravneet Singh Bittu as a ‘traitor’ crossed all boundaries of civility, decency and dignity.“It is entirely possible that he holds a deep grudge against Bittu Ji for choosing the policies of Vikas espoused by Modi Govt over the directionless Congress. But that cannot ever justify such a slur against a proud Sikh whose own grandfather was slain by terrorists.  Calling someone a ‘traitor friend’ means he has betrayed his country. While Gandhi may have many friends who are traitors, Shri Bittu is certainly not one of them,” Puri said.He said calling a distinguished Sikh a traitor without any basis was a slur on the entire Sikh community.“He should have known about the sacrifices made by our Guru Sahibs and our Sahibzaade to protect the Hindu faith before making such disrespectful remarks. He should’ve known about the love for the land Sikhism teaches every Sikh, and the valour with which Sikhs serve in the armed forces in large numbers to protect the sovereignty of Mother India before calling a disciple of Guru Sahibs a ‘traitor,’” Puri said. The minister said Rahul’s comment was a slur on every Sikh.“It is an insult to the contributions made by Sikhs in every sphere. It is a slur on our faith and our love for the motherland. It is a slur on the sacrifice of Bittu Ji’s grandfather and former Punjab CM, Sardar Beant Singh Ji.”“Let us also not forget the desecration of Golden Temple in 1984 with the same mindset,” he added.Senior Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa demanded the Lok Sabha speaker to act against Gandhi and said “Gandhi family is the traitor for the way they bombed the Golden temple, the way they killed Sikhs by wrapping tires around their necks. The anti-Sikh mentality of Congress as displayed in 1984 is intact.”Earlier, Bittu issued a video statement saying Rahul Gandhi called him a traitor and then stretched his hand for a hand shake.“They act like monarchs, as if they own the world. But this is the hand of a Sardar which will never be extended for such people who have murdered Sikhs in 1984, who sent tanks to our holiest shrine and desecrated it,” Bittu said, adding that Rahul was fine with him as long as he was in the Congress.“But because I am with the BJP I become a traitor. Fact is my own grandfather was killed by terrorists and so his name has to be taken whenever the name of Rajiv Gandhi is taken and that’s their problem,” Bittu said.On Wednesday morning, Rahul had called Bittu, who was passing through the stairs of the main entrance to Parliament, “traitor friend.”Bittu responded saying “you are all nation’s enemies (desh ke dushman).”Bittu also declined Rahul’s gesture of extending a hand for a hand shake.
