A 25-year-old man, who was returning from his office on a motorcycle, died after falling into a 15-foot-deep pit dug for Delhi Jal Board (DJB) work in Delhi’s Janakpuri area, the police said on Friday. The deceased, Kamal Dhyani, who worked as an assistant manager at HDFC Bank’s Rohini branch, was returning home to Kailashpuri in southwest Delhi, when the accident took place. The incident comes weeks after the death of a software engineer (27) in Noida after his car plunged into a waterlogged pit next to a construction site on January 16.Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Darde Sharad Bhaskar said the police were alerted by a PCR call at 8 am about a person lying in a pit along with his bike in Janakpuri. The victim was taken out of the excavated pit and rushed to hospital, where doctor declared him brought dead, he added. The DCP said an FIR had been registered in the Janakpuri police station under BNS Section 105 (culpable homicide) against the contractor and officials concerned of the Delhi Jal Board.According to the victim’s family, Kamal was returning home late on Wednesday night and had informed his twin brother Karan that he would reach home in 10 minutes. “We waited for 30 minutes. After that, we called him around 10 times, but he did not respond. We became worried, especially as many people have been getting kidnapped,” his brother said, adding that Kamal’s last call was at 11.30 pm.His family and friends alleged that the police failed to act despite repeated pleas even as the victim’s phone kept ringing through the night. However, the police have refuted the family’s claims. According to the DCP, Kamal’s brother came with some friends to the Vikaspuri police station at 1.35 am to enquire about the victim. The police told them there was no report of any mishappening regarding Kamal or his bike.Bhasker added that based on his last call, the police along with his family members, searched for Kamal at the nearby park, parking spaces and colony, but to no avail.Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said that three officials — a junior engineer, an executive engineer, and an assistant engineer — were suspended. Singh also stated that a committee had been formed, comprising director-level officers, which will submit a report within 24 hours.
