In a significant breakthrough in the Lucky Oberoi murder case, the Amritsar Rural Police arrested the key accused following a brief exchange of fire in the Khasa area of Amritsar on Saturday evening.A Beretta .30 bore pistol was recovered from his possession. The arrested accused has been identified as Shaminder Singh, a resident of Mithapur in Jalandhar. According to police officials, he is a previous offender with a criminal history.Satwinderpal Singh alias Lucky Oberoi was shot dead by unidentified assailants riding a white Activa on Friday morning at the parking area of Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Model Town, Jalandhar, shortly after he had paid obeisance.Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Sandeep Goel said after the murder, coordinated efforts were launched to identify and track the suspects.Acting on intelligence inputs that Shaminder Singh was hiding in the Khasa area to evade arrest, Amritsar Rural Police set up checkpoints and intensified vehicle checks.Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Suhail Qasim Mir said the accused was spotted during the operation riding a motorcycle. When signalled to stop, he panicked and attempted to flee, losing control of the vehicle and falling. He then allegedly opened fire at the police team in an attempt to escape.Police retaliated in self-defence, during which the accused sustained a gunshot injury. He was immediately overpowered and shifted to a hospital for treatment.During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly disclosed the involvement of another individual in the murder. Police teams are conducting raids to arrest the remaining suspects.
