India has signalled its intent to purchase $500 billion worth of US energy products, aircraft, technology goods and other commodities over the next five years as part of a broader push to deepen economic, strategic and technology cooperation under the interim trade agreement framework with the United States. The commitment, outlined in the joint statement issued by New Delhi and Washington, is aimed at strengthening resilient and trusted supply chains, boosting advanced technology collaboration and aligning economic security priorities between the two countries.According to the framework, India plans to significantly scale up imports of US energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, precious metals, coking coal and advanced technology products. Both sides have also agreed to expand trade in high-end technology goods, including graphics processing units (GPUs) and equipment used in data centres, alongside enhanced joint cooperation in critical and emerging technologies. The agreement places strong emphasis on economic security alignment, including closer cooperation on investment screening, export controls and coordinated efforts to address non-market practices of third countries that distort global trade and supply chains.Officials said the framework reflects a shared effort to align economic and strategic priorities at a time of global supply-chain disruptions and rising technological competition, while laying the foundation for long-term cooperation in sectors central to future growth.Highlighting the aviation sector as a key beneficiary, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said US aircraft manufacturers were increasingly viewing India as a major global sourcing hub. The interim trade agreement provides for the removal of US tariffs on certain Indian aircraft and aircraft parts, offering a boost to domestic aerospace manufacturing.“Already, Boeing and Airbus are large buyers of aircraft parts from India. Both companies are looking at India as the largest foreign original equipment manufacturer base for components going forward,” Goyal told reporters, adding that he had held discussions with the top leadership of both firms. “There is a lot of excitement about the India-US partnership.”India is a key market for Boeing, with over 265 commercial and military aircraft currently operating in the country. The US plane maker works with more than 325 Indian suppliers, with annual sourcing of components and services valued at over $1.25 billion.European aerospace major Airbus has also been steadily expanding its India footprint and aims to increase sourcing of components and services from the country to $2 billion by 2030, up from around $1.4 billion at present.Officials said the growing integration of Indian manufacturers into global aerospace and technology supply chains underscored the strategic intent of the interim trade framework, which seeks not only to expand trade volumes but also to anchor India more firmly in high-value manufacturing and advanced technology ecosystems.
