Illegal constructions razed in Jalandhar’s Latifpura after HC order, clears way for long-pending road project

In an early morning operation on Tuesday, the district administration demolished all illegal constructions in the Latifpura locality in Jalandhar district, assisted by machinery from the Municipal Corporation and conducted under heavy police protection.The structures, built on land belonging to the Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT), had first been removed in December 2022, but the occupants continued to live in tents on the site, refusing to vacate.At 4:30 am, teams from the MC and Jalandhar police reached the area and evicted all occupants. Using JCB machines, authorities demolished both temporary and permanent structures erected by the squatters.Police personnel oversee the district administration’s drive to remove illegal encroachments following High Court orders, in Latifpura area in Jalandhar, on Tuesday.The land has been earmarked for a road project, which had remained stalled since the initial eviction. The JIT had offered alternate land to the occupants, but they refused to relocate, leading both sides into litigation. In July last year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the clearing of the area.The action is expected to bring relief to residents of Model Town, Shiv Vihar, Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Mithapur, Jalandhar Heights, and commercial hubs including PPR Market and Curo Mall.
