The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the introduction of an On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for the evaluation of Class 12 answer books starting from the 2026 board examinations. Exams begin on February 17.In a circular issued to principals of all affiliated schools on February 9, CBSE said the move aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accuracy in the assessment process.Under the new system, Class 12 answer sheets will be evaluated digitally, while the evaluation of Class 10 answer books will continue in physical mode in 2026, the board clarified.CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said the OSM system would help eliminate totalling errors, reduce manual intervention through automated coordination, and ensure faster evaluation with broader teacher participation. He noted that teachers would be able to conduct evaluations from their own schools, resulting in significant savings in time and transportation costs. The board also said that post-result verification of marks would no longer be required, reducing manpower needs, while enabling teachers from all CBSE-affiliated schools, including those overseas, to participate in the evaluation process. Bhardwaj described the initiative as an environmentally sustainable digital reform. To facilitate a smooth transition, CBSE has directed schools to ensure the availability of necessary infrastructure, including computer labs with public static IPs, systems running Windows OS 8 or above with at least 4 GB RAM, updated web browsers, Adobe Reader, reliable internet connectivity (minimum 2 Mbps), and uninterrupted power supply.CBSE will support schools through training programmes, multiple dry runs, instructional videos, and a dedicated call centre for issue resolution. Teachers with Online Affiliated School Information System (OASIS) IDs will be allowed to access and familiarise themselves with the platform. The board conducts Class 10 and 12 examinations annually in India and in 26 countries, catering to nearly 46 lakh students.
