Navneet Kaur, the wife of 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict Davinder Pal Singh Bhullar, is dejected as the Delhi Government’s Sentence Review Board (SRB) has once again denied the premature release to her husband. She said it was the lack of political will which had been hindering the release of her ‘ailing’ husband. For the past one decade and a half, Bhullar has been suffering from schizophrenia (mental disorder) and receiving treatment at a government hospital in Amritsar.Kaur said she had now stopped approaching political leaders as it ended up with hollow promises. The SRB has rejected his release multiple times, prompting Kaur to take legal course. The issue is pending with the Delhi High Court.Related news: Delhi Govt rejects blast convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar’s plea for early releaseBhullar’s release: SGPC slams Delhi govt; disappointed, says SAD president“Earlier, the BJP-led government at the Centre and the AAP dispensation in Delhi played the blame game on the matter. But what about now? We were hopeful of a positive outcome, given the fact that the BJP was in power at both the Centre and Delhi. Still, no thought has been spared to give relief to my husband,” she said. She said the BJP could have at least fulfilled its ‘promise’ of complying with the notification of 2019.Bhullar was one of the eight Sikh prisoners who were to be given special remission and liberated from prison under Article 161 of the Constitution on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev in 2019, but in vain.Bhullar was convicted and sentenced to death in 2001 and lodged in Tihar Jail, New Delhi. Later, the Supreme Court had commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment, keeping in view his ill health and undue delay in trial. In 2015, he was shifted to the Amritsar Central Jail on health grounds. Since then, he has been under treatment. He has already undergone around 30 years’ actual sentence.“I am a professional nurse and have served for 24 years in Canada, before shifting here. Who could have counselled him better than me if he had been with me at home? But, the political parties have double face. All leaders rake up the issue for political gains only”, she said.As per norms, he was required to undergo only 14 years of actual sentence and 20 years sentence, including remissions.
