Questioning the nexus between activist Sonam Wangchuk’s speeches and the violence that broke out in Ladakh in September last year, the Supreme Court on Wednesday told the Centre that it was “reading too much” into his remarks.Appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj submitted that Wangchuk had warned that a violent agitation, similar to the one in Nepal, could take place in Ladakh and that youth were expressing doubts about the effectiveness of peaceful methods. “He (Wangchuk) is worried…We will have to take the entire sentence…read it…‘some people are abandoning Gandhian peaceful ways. This is worrying’…the focus is departure from non-violent way, departure is something worrying,” the Bench observed.“You are reading too much into it,” the Bench told the Centre, indicating that its interpretation went beyond the plain meaning of his words. The Bench asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to demonstrate a proximate nexus between Wangchuk’s speech and the outbreak of violence. “How do you link it to the 24th (September 2025) night?” it asked.Mehta said Wangchuk should not be compared with Mahatma Gandhi. “I was told that your Lordships read Gandhiji’s last speech. Let us not glorify something which is completely anti-India with the Father of the Nation,” he submitted.“Let it not become tomorrow’s headline that your lordships compared the petitioner (Wangchuk) to Gandhiji. We will have to see the context. This health facade is also a social media facade,” Mehta told the Bench, which will resume hearing the matter on Thursday.Clarifying its position, the Bench said it was not concerned with what happened outside the courtroom and that its references to Gandhi’s speeches were only for contextual comparison and not intended to draw parallels.
