Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Thursday lauded the state government’s anti-drug campaign, saying it had been “one-hundred per cent successful” in curbing the substance abuse and there should be no hesitation in accepting the truth.“Jo sach hai usko saveekar karna chahiye (the truth should be acknowledged),” he said expressing confidence that the results of the government drive would be visible by next six months. The Governor made these remarks during his visit to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bathinda after concluding his march in Abohar.Later, he paid obeisance at the Takht Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo, where he also met Jathedar Baba Tek Singh Dhanula. The AAP government had launched the statewide drive against the abuse on March 1 last year. Kataria’s remarks assume significance as he had been under AAP fire after SAD president Sukhbir Badal and several BJP leaders joined his foot march, stirring a political row.AAP had asked him to be careful about who he walks with, alleging that the SAD-BJP regime in the past had been responsible for the spread of the menace in the state. The Congress too had accused him of attempting to revive the SAD-BJP alliance through his march ahead of the Assembly polls next year, a charge rejected by Kataria.Replying to a query on the government’s anti-drug campaign Yudh Nashian Virudh, the Governor said, “From March to the end of last year, under the first phase of the campaign, around 31,000 FIRs were registered and nearly 41,000 persons involved in drug trafficking arrested.”‘Govt alone can’t end abuse, people’s support a must’“About 1,900 kg of heroin was seized. A significant quantity of drugs is being smuggled through drones (from Pakistan). Both the Centre and the state government are working together to strengthen anti-drone mechanisms,” he added. He, however, reiterated that Punjab could not be made drug-free by government efforts alone.“Collective efforts of every village and every citizen are required. Only then we will be able to shape our younger generation into strong citizens of a powerful nation,” the Governor said.Speaking about the second phase of the Yudh Nashian Virudh, which began on January 7, he expressed confidence that visible results would emerge within six months. He asserted that not only drug traffickers but also those found in possession of narcotics in their homes would face legal consequences.“We must continue taking steps towards our goal. If not today, then tomorrow, the objective will be achieved,” he said urging people to extend full cooperation to eradicate the drug menace from the state.‘Pak pushing drugs into state to destroy youth’Abohar: Earlier in the day, Kataria accused Pakistan of pushing drugs into the state as part of a conspiracy to “destroy” lives of the youth after being unable to win wars. Concluding his padyatra here, he also administered to a large number of people the oath of undertaking a collective fight against the menace. The Punjab Governor held the foot march in border districts of Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Fazilka. Kataria released balloons carrying the message of war against drugs near Rani Jhansi Market, where people had gathered long before his arrival. The Governor walked for about 2 km, concluding his foot march at DAV College in 150 minutes as hundreds of people greeted the participants on the way.
