Days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and his son Raninder Singh to its zonal office in Jalandhar in an old case of alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, the Finance Ministry has issued marching orders to the senior-most officer of the central agency posted here.Additional Director Ravi Tiwari has been transferred to Chennai and his IRS batchmate Dinesh Paruchuri has been posted here in his place. While Raninder had been summoned for Thursday, Capt Amarinder had been asked to appear on Friday. Both did not come as the former CM is admitted to a Mohali hospital after a knee surgery.Tiwari, a 2009-batch IRS officer, had joined in Jalandhar in September 2023. His transfer at a time when the summons were issued against the BJP leader is being seen as a direct consequence of the action. The summons to Capt Amarinder Singh, who is also a member of the National Executive Committee of the BJP, had taken everyone in political circles by surprise. Having remained inactive for a long period, he had recently become politically active and had been giving interviews expressing his views in favour of an alliance of the saffron party with the SAD. He had also hinted at a little unease within the party.Following the summons, AICC general secretary and Punjab affairs in-charge Bhupesh Baghel had said if Capt Amarinder Singh wanted to return to the Congress, the party high command could consider it, sparking speculation about the former CM’s possible comeback.AICC secretary and MLA Pargat Singh had also termed the action an attempt of the saffron party to use the central agency to muzzle Capt Amarinder’s voice. He had slammed the BJP for “weaponising” central agencies to serve its political ends. He said, “When Capt Amarinder Singh stood firm as the CM defending Punjab and its farmers, the Centre allegedly deployed agencies to undermine him — only to later pressure him into joining the BJP.”Capt Amarinder Singh’s son Raninder Singh had been first summoned by the ED in July 2016. He was quizzed over the alleged movement of funds to Switzerland and the creation of the Jacaranda Trust. He had again appeared before the ED in November 2020. The ED probe against him was reportedly linked to the Income Tax Department’s alleged findings that certain assets acquired abroad by him were not disclosed. ED sources said the summons to Capt Amarinder was also in the same connection. Raninder had written on X on February 11 evening, “As law-abiding citizens, we will cooperate fully with every investigation agency. We have absolute faith in the rule of law and are confident that truth and justice will prevail.”Paruchuri had joined the ED as its Additional Director in Hyderabad on a deputation basis in July 2022. He had earlier served in the Income Tax Department in various cities, including Hyderabad and Mumbai.
