Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said his vision was to catapult India into the world’s top three artificial intelligence superpowers, even as he called for common AI standards across the globe.“Technology exists to serve humanity and not replace it. Welfare of all should be the core of AI policy globally,” the PM said, while talking about the theme behind AI Impact Summit. As New Delhi hosts the first AI Summit in the Global South, Modi said his vision for AI in Aatmanirbhar Bharat rests on three pillars of sovereignty, inclusivity and innovation.“India should be among the top three AI superpowers globally, not just in consumption, but also creation of artificial intelligence. Our AI models will be deployed worldwide, serving billions in their native languages. Our AI startups will be valued in the hundreds of billions, creating millions of high-quality jobs,” the PM said in an interview to ANI on Tuesday.Flagging the need for common principles and standards in artificial intelligence, Modi said a self-reliant India in AI meant “writing our own code for the digital century”.The PM also allayed apprehensions that AI would eat into jobs. “Work does not disappear with technology, only its nature changes and new types of jobs are created,” he stated.Modi further said, “While AI may enhance human capabilities, the ultimate responsibility for decision-making must always remain with human beings.”He further asserted that while the world was worried about AI deepening divides, India was using it to dissolve differences. “Through the India AI Mission, we are ensuring that the code reflects our values, serves our people, and positions India as a responsible global AI leader. Our vision is that AI must accelerate global development, while remaining deeply human-centric,” he said, asking the IT sector to lead not just in service delivery, but in building AI solutions that work for India and the world. The Prime Minister added that he viewed AI as a force-multiplier that will further help nations and the world push the boundaries.“In India, we are not just nurturing talent, but building infrastructure, policy ecosystem and a skill base required for India to move from participating in the AI revolution to shaping it,” he added.
