A scrap dealer in Faridabad returned 100 grams of gold jewellery worth approximately Rs 15 lakh to its rightful owner. The jewellery belonged to Ashok Sharma, a resident of Faridabad, who had accidentally sold it along with scrap during a Diwali clean-up.The gold was formally handed over at the office of ACP Ballabgarh, Jitesh Malhotra, on Thursday.According to Sharma, his family had stored their gold ornaments in a box, which was then placed inside a sack before they left for the Kumbh Mela in January last year to prevent theft. However, during Diwali cleaning, the sack was mistakenly treated as junk and sold to a scrap dealer. The family later realised that the jewellery box had been sold along with the scrap. When Sharma approached the scrap dealer soon after discovering the mistake, the jewellery could not be located, and the family returned home disappointed.Nearly four months later, the scrap dealer, Haji Akhtar Khan, popularly known as Khan Sahab, found the gold wrapped in paper while sorting the scrap. After confirming its authenticity with a goldsmith, he informed the police and brought the jewellery to ACP Malhotra’s office, where it was returned to Sharma.“After finding the gold, I got it checked by a goldsmith. Since Ashok Sharma had earlier approached me about missing jewellery, I felt it was my responsibility to return it. My entire family supported this decision, and I informed the police,” Khan said.ACP Jitesh Malhotra praised Khan’s honesty.“This incident shows that honesty is still alive. I appeal to people to be careful with their valuables,” he said.
