Amid speculation about Akalis and splinter factions uniting on one platform, a video clip surfaced on social media has become the talk of the town.In the video clip, senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia and rebels Prem Singh Chandumajra and Surjit Singh Rakhra were seen exchanging pleasantries in the lobby of a building.Actually, the trio were to appear at the same Chandigarh courts in an old case.Chandumajra and Rakhra had  prominently spearheaded the parallel ‘splinter’ Akali  faction with prefix ‘Punar Surjit’ under former Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh against the Badals. It was Chandumajra who initiated the first move to start a conversation with Majithia, who was attending a phone call, addressing him as ‘aao jee…Majhe de Jarnail Saheb’ .Instantly, Majithia too reciprocated in the same gesture, ending the ongoing phone call instantly to attend to Chandumajra. Later, they both slipped to a corner. At the same location, Rakhra too joined in and met Majithia with warmth. After getting out of jail on bail in the disproportionate assets case, Majithia revealed that his prime focus would be to strengthen the SAD cadre and would not hesitate to go barefoot to bring back the dissident Akalis back into the party fold.Talking to The Tribune, Chandumajra said, “It happened by chance that we were together. There was no formal meeting or political discourse. We were to attend an appearance in the court in a five-year-old case pertaining to a protest near the then Punjab CM’s residence, while we were together under the SAD.”Chandumajra said that he too was in favour of being on one platform to strengthen the SAD ‘unconditionally’.“Unity is a welcome step and we should think in this direction to save Punjab. I welcome Majhithia’s vision, but so far, there has been no formal call of unity from the other side. The December 2, 2024, directives of Akal Takht were also in the direction of strengthening the Akali cadre after burying the differences”, he said.On the other hand, another Akali dissident leader Karnail Singh Panjouli, who was part of the ‘Punar Surjit’ group quit today, citing his difference of opinion with the existing leadership on his social media handler. Panjouli, former general secretary of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), had opposed Badal. He was among the delegates who had conducted the parallel membership drive for the resurrection of the SAD.
