Manipur CM Y Khemchand Singh on Tuesday met PM Modi and briefed him on the sustained measures undertaken by the state government to restore peace, stability and communal harmony across the state. He also urged Modi for enhanced focus on strengthening opportunities for women both in the valley and the hill districts, so that development reaches every household and every community.After meeting Modi, Khemchand said on X, “I had the opportunity to brief the Hon’ble Prime Minister on the sustained measures undertaken by the State Government to restore peace, stability, and communal harmony across Manipur. We reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to ensuring inclusive governance and long-term reconciliation.””I also respectfully urged for enhanced focus on women empowerment and #NariShakti strengthening opportunities for women both in the valley and the hill districts, so that development reaches every household and every community,” he added further.Meanwhile, even as violent incidents have scaled down, around 250 companies of paramilitary forces are deployed in fringe areas of the state as fears of confrontation between Meiteis and Kukis remain palpable, according to the sources. While the Kukis dominate the hills, the Meiteis inhabit Imphal valley ever since ethnic violence had broken out in the state in May 2023.Sources aware of developments said that the deployment of paramilitary forces’ companies are mainly deployed in Imphal West, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Bishnupur and Jiribam for maintanance of law and order and to avoid confrontation between Meiteis and Kukis.Sources, however, informed this newspaper that though the situation was under control, heavy deployment of paramilitary forces’ companies shows that the authorities are not leaving anything to chance, especially after the spike in violence earlier this month in the state, soon after the new Chief Minister had taken oath.After a brief lull, violent incidents had spiked in Manipur just days after Khemchand took oath as CM earlier this month.Kuki groups, which have been seeking a separate administration for areas under their control in Manipur, had sent out multiple ultimatums to its legislators, warning them not to participate in the government formation.In 2025, 526 insurgents and overground works were apprehended by the security forces, while 10 insurgents had surrendered. Also 71 insurgents’ bunkers were destroyed. Around 1,800 arms were recovered, 23,000 rounds of ammunition were caught and 3,400 kh of explosives were also recovered by forces. Besides, 1,923 grenades, 351 bombs, 41 rockets, 1,484 IEDs, 21,266 detonators and 3,180 kg of narcotics were also recovered from the state.
