Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Friday said political parties in Tamil Nadu had suggested holding the forthcoming Assembly elections in a single phase, adding that a decision would be taken after considering all relevant factors.He said that the Election Commission’s decision on the number of phases will be known once the poll schedule is announced, at a press conference in Chennai after reviewing preparedness for the Assembly elections.In 2021, the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 6. On the recently concluded Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, Kumar described it as a model for the country and a great success. He assured that adequate amenities would be provided at 75,000 polling stations across Tamil Nadu.On vote counting, he said that mandatory VVPAT verification would take place. Even after counting is completed, any candidate may, on payment of a prescribed fee, seek matching of EVM results with VVPAT slips within seven days.Kumar asserted that the forthcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu would set a record, surpassing even Bihar.He said Tamil Nadu had consistently set benchmarks in voter turnout. Replying to a question, he said the online nomination facility was available through the Election Commission website, though nominations must be filed physically in accordance with the law.
