Soon after a Delhi court discharged Arvind Kejriwal and 22 others in the Delhi excise scam case, signs of unease surfaced in the Congress camp with senior party leaders questioning the timing of the judicial relief to AAP leaders. The party whose top brass had once made an appearance alongside Kejriwal and JMM’s Hemant Soren, both facing graft charges, today attacked AAP as a convenient ally of the BJP, with Kejriwal hitting back with “does the Congress not have any shame” remark.Senior Congress leader and media cell chief Pawan Khera led the accusations against Kejriwal and the BJP today and said the discharge orders were meant to weaken the Congress in the wake of upcoming Punjab and Gujarat elections. In Punjab, the Congress is the main challenger to the ruling AAP. In Gujarat, too, the Congress is the main opposition against the ruling BJP, with AAP making gains.“The BJP is not a political party. It is a wish-fulfilling serpent with the power to change its form. It has only one obsessive goal: to defeat the Congress and create a Congress-free India. For this goal, it can stoop to any level,” Khera said.He said the elections were nearing and so the script was entirely predictable.“There will be a sudden surge in cases against Congress leaders, P Chidambaram is being dragged back into the headlines again because elections are due in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, on the other side, the proceedings against their “convenient allies” in the Aam Aadmi Party and others will quietly fizzle out in view of the Gujarat and Punjab elections,” the Congress media head said.Khera added that this was the BJP’s real game — turning vendetta into governance and using investigative agencies like electoral tools.Khera also wondered why TV channels splashed Kejriwal’s tears today when they had made light of the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s clean chit to former Haryana CM and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda two days ago in the alleged Panchkula land grab matter.Still, it was only “Kejriwal’s crocodile tears that were splashed across every screen and etched into public memory. The truth is simple: the BJP decides what to amplify and when — glorifying sinners as saints only to suit its electoral prospects,” the Congress said, signalling unease over possibilities that Kejriwal would convert his judicial discharge into electoral capital in Punjab and Gujarat.
