Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Mumbai on Friday on a four-day official visit to India. He is accompanied by his wife Daina Fix Carney.Announcing his arrival, Carney posted on X: “India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy.”We just arrived in Mumbai to meet with business leaders — and forge partnerships that will unlock new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.”Carney will fly to New Delhi on March 1 and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi there on March 2, as per the official schedule. He will also meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and address the India-Canada CEO Forum in the national capital before returning to Canada.Carney’s visit from February 27 to March 2 assumes significance as India and Canada are resetting their diplomatic ties. The visit also comes at time when Canada, under pressure from US President Donald Trump’s policies, is looking out for more partners. India-Canada ties nose-dived after former PM Justin Trudeau’s government accused India of carrying out targeted killings of Sikh separatist leaders in Canada.Modi and Carney will review the progress achieved till date across diverse areas of the strategic partnership, building on their earlier meetings in Kananaskis (June 2025) and Johannesburg (November 2025).They will also take stock of the ongoing cooperation in trade, investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, and people-to-people ties. The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and global developments.
