Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Micron’s semiconductor assembly, test and packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking the commencement of commercial production and shipment of the first Made-in-India semiconductor memory modules.Addressing the gathering, Modi hailed the occasion as another historic moment following the success of the world’s largest AI Summit. “While the AI Summit showcased India’s capabilities in AI, today we are witnessing India’s unwavering commitment to technological leadership,” he remarked.Modi highlighted the 21st century as the era of “AI Revolution”, with semiconductors acting as a crucial bridge between the Industrial Revolution and the rise of artificial intelligence. Drawing a historical parallel, he stated, “If oil was the regulator of the 20th century, the microchip will be the regulator of the 21st century.” He emphasized that a tiny chip now connects these two monumental shifts in global technology.Outlining India’s ambitious drive to lead in the semiconductor sector, Modi recalled how, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when much of the world was facing uncertainty, India boldly announced its semiconductor mission.The Prime Minister also pointed out India’s rapid transition from being known primarily for its software and IT services to strengthening its presence in the hardware sector. “Today, in Sanand, we witness the dawn of a new future. The commencement of commercial production at Micron’s ATMP facility will significantly enhance India’s role in the global technology value chain,” he added.In a message to global investors, Modi emphasised, “India is ready. India is reliable. India delivers.” He assured both international and domestic partners of steadfast support from both the Central and state governments, marking this decade as a pivotal turning point for India’s technological trajectory.Highlighting the broader scope of the semiconductor ecosystem, Modi explained that building it involves more than just constructing factories. “It is a multi-layered system that includes machine manufacturers, design engineers, research institutions, logistics networks, and skilled technicians,” he noted. “India is focusing on the entire value chain. The ‘India Semiconductor Mission 2.0,’ announced in this year’s budget, is a step in this direction,” the Prime Minister stated.Looking ahead, Modi emphasised the immense growth potential within India’s electronics sector. “As production increases, so will the demand for materials, components, and services within India. This presents a tremendous opportunity,” he remarked. With more of India’s population becoming first-time gadget users, demand across sectors like electronics and automobiles is steadily rising. “‘Make in India’ is now in full swing,” he added, pointing out that India has seen substantial growth in electronics production and exports over the last 11 years.With this landmark event, India continues its ambitious journey to become a global hub for technological innovation and manufacturing. Both domestic and international opportunities are now primed for investors, signalling a bright future for India’s position in the global tech landscape.
