The BJP and the Congress are likely to finalise the names of their candidates for the two Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant next month.Sources in the Congress said that 10 candidates had applied for the one seat that falls in the Congress kitty.A senior party leader confirmed that the candidate will be an “insider” while ruling out a party ticket to the outsiders who names have been doing the rounds.Sources maintained that by this logic Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Raj Babbar were out of the race.Among the applicants are four Ahir leaders including the state chief, Rao Narendra Singh, former state chief Udai Bhan among others.”The name of the selected candidate is likely to come by afternoon,” a party senior said. Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, sources said, was in Delhi last week while the Haryana Vidhan Sabha was in session to push for his candidate. The BJP also is slated to hold a meeting on Monday in Delhi and a panel of names has been sent to the high command.Among the names doing the rounds are Suneeta Duggal and Minister of State Ravneet Bittu as also former Hisar MP Kuldeep Bishnoi.Sources said that the BJP is likely to support an independent candidate willing to contest against the Congress candidate.Bittu was in August, 2024, elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan in a bypoll. The election comes following the vacancy in the upper house seat, and with no other candidate filing nomination, Bittu’s victory was confirmed without contest. He was elected for two years and it ends in June. The term of two Rajya Sabha members, Kiran Choudhry and Ramchandra Jangra, will end on April 9. To fill the seats falling vacant due to the completion of their tenure, the schedule for the biennial election was notified last week. While nominations for both seats can be filed until March 5, scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on March 6, and candidates would be permitted to withdraw their names until March 9. If required, polling will be held on March 16.
