Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said military confrontation couldn’t resolve global disputes and stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy amid rapidly escalating tensions in several parts of the world, including the ongoing conflict in West Asia.Speaking during a joint interaction with the visiting President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, Modi said the world was passing through a period of deep instability marked by multiple conflicts.“The world is going through a period of instability and uncertainty. From Ukraine to West Asia, conflict persists in many parts of the world,” Modi said, adding that such conditions made international cooperation and diplomacy more critical than ever.Emphasising the need for peaceful solutions, the Prime Minister said both India and Finland believed firmly in the rule of law and dialogue.“We agree that military conflict alone cannot resolve any issue. Whether in Ukraine or West Asia, we will continue to support every effort for a speedy end to conflict and peace,” he said.Modi also called for urgent reforms of global institutions to address emerging international challenges and reiterated the shared commitment of the two countries to eliminate terrorism in all its forms. His remarks come at a time when tensions in West Asia have sharply escalated following a series of military confrontations involving Israel, Iran and the United States. The current phase of the crisis began on February 28 when Israel, reportedly with support from the United States, launched a major military operation against Iranian targets in what it described as a pre-emptive strike against Tehran’s military capabilities and nuclear programme. The operation, known as Operation Lion’s Roar, involved missile and air strikes on several sites in Iran, including targets in the capital Tehran. The strikes, in which Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei was killed, triggered a large-scale retaliation from Iran, which launched waves of ballistic missiles and drones targeting Israeli territory and US military installations across the Gulf region.Explosions and air defence interceptions have since been reported in several cities across the region, including Dubai, Doha and Manama, as Iran expanded its attacks on US assets and regional allies hosting American forces. The conflict further intensified after Iranian missile strikes targeted Gulf states, and Israel responded with fresh air raids on Iranian and allied militia positions in the region.Against this backdrop, Modi said India and Europe were entering what he described as a “golden period” of relations, with growing cooperation expected to contribute to global stability, economic growth, and shared prosperity.“In such a global environment, India and Europe — two of the world’s major diplomatic powers — are entering a golden period in their relations,” he said.India has consistently advocated dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve international disputes, maintaining relations with multiple stakeholders in the region even as geopolitical rivalries intensify.
