Relief for India as Iran says strait shut only for US, allies

In a glimmer of hope for India, Iran has said the Strait of Hormuz is closed exclusively to vessels from the US, Israel, Europe and their allies. The move comes even as India is in talks to secure oil supplies from other sources. Almost 40 per cent of Indian crude oil imports flow through the strait, a narrow 33-km wide waterway between Iran and Oman.The strait has been closed since March 1, after the US and Israel jointly launched strikes against Iran.Meanwhile, Russia and the US have weighed in on the oil crisis, as more than a fifth of global crude and gas supplies pass through the Hormuz.Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov on Thursday said his country “has been open to supplying crude oil to India”.US President Donald Trump said the US Development Finance Corporation (DFC) would provide insurance “at a very reasonable price” to all shipping firms in the region. This would ensure free flow of energy to the world, Trump claimed, adding that the US Navy would protect ships in the Middle East, if necessary.The sources said India was currently sourcing almost 1 million barrels of crude a day from Russia and more was in the pipeline. They added that India was in a very comfortable position in terms of energy security. The current stock position was comfortable and stocks were being replenished every day.There was no shortage of LPG or LNG, and there was no shortage of crude oil globally. India was in touch with other suppliers as well, they said. Australia and Canada have offered to sell gas to India. Recently, India signed a new contract with the UAE and the US.India imports 195 million metric standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) of gas, of which Qatar supplies 60 MMSCMD. India is looking for alternative markets to buy gas. On Monday, Qatar said it had shut gas production fearing strikes. India was also in talks with major oil producers and traders to buy crude and LPG, the sources added.India is in discussions with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). On Monday, the eight OPEC+ countries — Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman — announced they would produce additional supplies from April 1.
