England captain Harry Brook was devastated after dropping Sanju Samson early, yet astonished by Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance in repelling England’s chase of 254, potentially the highest ever, during the ICC T20 World Cup second semi-final at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.Bumrah’s miserly 18th over yielded just six runs, leaving England needing an improbable 39 off the last two. “He’s a very good bowler, arguably the best of all time at the minute. He’s been outstanding for years. India fielded brilliantly too – Axar Patel’s catch to dismiss me was one of the best I’ve seen. Hats off to them,” said Brook. Chasing India’s 253/7, England reached 246/7, for a thrilling combined 499-run epic.“They’ve got some extremely good players and clean ball-strikers. We didn’t execute as well as we could, compounded by dropped catches, and that cost us,” Brook admitted. He lauded Jacob Bethell’s defiant 105, battling to the final over. “I’m disappointed but extremely proud. Couldn’t ask for more as captain. We’ve had an amazing campaign. As I said the other day, we’re never out of games – proven again tonight. We stayed in it until the last over. The boys should be proud. Bethell is phenomenal. In high pressure on India’s home turf, that innings was just phenomenal. He’ll have a hell of a career with England. I look forward to sharing lots of time with him.”Brook revealed England’s blueprint against India’s ‘mystery’ spinner Varun Chakravarthy. “We identified he bowls short. Bethell put him away early, so he went fuller – and Bethell hit a six back over his head. It’s about cricket smarts, reading their plans and match-ups.”
