The Trinamool Congress (TMC) would support the Opposition-sponsored resolution seeking the removal of Om Birla as the Lok Sabha Speaker when Parliament’s Budget session resumes on Monday, senior party leaders said on Saturday.TMC sources said the party had been in favour of the motion from the beginning but wanted the process to be taken up after some time rather than being rushed during the earlier phase of the Budget session. A senior leader said the TMC had communicated that the notice should be submitted a few days later to allow adequate preparation by opposition members.Notice to be taken up tomorrowThe notice on removal of Lok Sabha Speaker OP Birla is the only item of business for March 9, when Parliament reconvenes for the second part of the Budget sessionFor the resolution to be admitted, at least 50 members must stand in support of the notice when it is taken up in the House. Afterwards, it will be taken up for discussion and votingAt least 118 MPs from opposition parties have submitted a notice to move a resolution seeking Birla’s removal, alleging that he has conducted proceedings in a partisan manner. While Trinamool MPs did not initially sign the notice, the party has now confirmed that it will vote in favour of the motion when it comes up for consideration.The leader said nearly all Trinamool MPs would be present in the House on Monday, except those who are unwell. Party leaders are also coordinating with other members of the opposition alliance, including the Indian National Congress and other constituents of the INDIA bloc, over the strategy for the vote.The Lok Sabha secretariat has listed the notice to remove Birla as the only item of business for March 9, when the House reconvenes for the second part of the Budget session. Under parliamentary procedure, the notice will be taken up for admission once it is called by the Chair.For the resolution to be admitted, at least 50 members must stand in support of the notice when it is taken up in the House. If the required number of MPs rises in support, the motion will be formally admitted and taken up for discussion and voting.If fewer than 50 members stand, the resolution will not be moved and the process will end at that stage.Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have issued whips directing their Lok Sabha members to be present in the House on Monday when the matter is taken up.
