As the conflict in West Asia widens, US President Donald Trump on Sunday claimed to have “decimated” the Iranian regime, and said he could send troops on ground. Iran, meanwhile, claimed it could fight the war for six months. Both Iran, and the US and Israel, continued attacks Sunday, with several of Iran’s oil refineries and oil production units being hit.Meanwhile, Trump offered a description of what he had meant by his demand for an “unconditional surrender” by Iran. “It’s where they cry uncle, or when they can’t fight any long longer and there’s nobody around to cry uncle — that could happen too,” the US President told reporters aboard Air Force One.Trump said he could send US troops into Iran, but added a caveat that these troops could secure the enriched uranium, believed to be stored at Iran’s nuclear sites the US bombed last year.Meanwhile, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) official claimed that Iran could fight a war of this size and scale for “at least” another six months. The defiant statement was carried by the semi-official Fars news agency, which has links to the IRGC.Both sides have accused each other of having damaged water desalination plants. Hundreds of desalination plants sit along the Persian Gulf coast, and the region relies heavily on them for its drinking water. The United States attacked a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday.“The US committed a blatant and desperate crime by attacking a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island,” he wrote on X.Bahrain said Tehran hit a desalination plant, while the UAE said it had, again, defended itself against several missiles launched by Iran.Oman Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, in a post on X, said: “(The) action taken by Israel and the US against Iran is both immoral and illegal. But the retaliation by Iran against its neighbours is also deeply regrettable and unacceptable”.Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had previously apologised to neighbouring countries attacked by Iran.He had also said Iran’s interim leadership council had approved that no attacks or missile strikes would be carried out against such countries unless an attack against Iran originated from them.In Washington, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, when asked about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, said: “The plan is to get oil, and natural gas, and fertiliser, and all of the products from the Gulf flowing through the strait…One large tanker has already gone through the strait with no issues at all… energy will flow soon.”Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the US-Israel war on Iran “should never have happened”.“The world cannot return to the law of the jungle,” Wang Yi told a press conference in Beijing, calling for an end to military operations.
