A day after The Tribune highlighted twin “drug-related” deaths at Mehatpur, the Jalandhar (Rural) police on Monday suspended Mehatpur police station munshi Sukhbir Singh and transferred SHO Pankaj Kumar. The Jalandhar district administration also announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of Boote Dian Channan village Sarpanch Mahinder Singh, a job for one family member at the Deputy Commissioner’s office and the naming of a playground after him.Mahinder Singh, who had been vocal against drug peddlers in the area, was attacked by armed assailants a few days ago. He sustained serious injuries and died on March 6. His death triggered an indefinite dharna outside the Mehatpur police station. The protest, which entered its third day, was lifted on Monday after the administration assured action and compensation.Nakodar SDM Simranjit Singh said Rs 5-lakh compensation, a job for the sarpanch’s son and the naming of a playground had been approved as per the villagers’ demands. A playground at Baghela village would be named “Shaheed Mahinder Singh Sarpanch Boote Dian Channan Yadgaari Ground”.Meanwhile, amid criticism over the deaths at Mehatpur, the police said former kabaddi player Vansh of Udhowal village died due to “deterioration of health” and not a drug overdose. SSP Harvinder Singh Virk said Vansh had earlier developed drug addiction and an FIR was registered against him last year under Sections 27, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act at Mehatpur. He had undergone de-addiction treatment and had given up drugs.“After returning home he was living a normal life but unfortunately died due to sudden deterioration of health,” the SSP said, adding that the exact cause of death was not known as the family did not get a post-mortem conducted. Vansh was found dead on the Baloki Khera road on Saturday.Vansh’s father Shamsher Singh, however, said his son had no serious health issues apart from drug addiction.“My son fell prey to drugs. I only appeal to the police to stop the drug menace so that more young lives are not lost,” he said.Farm leader Ram Singh, who was among protesters opposing the death of Mahinder Singh, said, “Days before Mahinder’s death, the munshi had revealed the identity of the sarpanch as informer thereby imperilling his life.”
