Punjab State Women’s Commission has taken a suo motu notice of a video of Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira targeting the Punjab government’s Rs 1,000 monthly financial assistance scheme for women. After ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced the financial aid, a video surfaced showing some women celebrating. In response, Khaira posted on social media: “How can women who are made to perform Giddha for just Rs 1,000 be expected to raise brave sons (Surmein)?”Following this, the Bholath MLA and PPCC President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring have been directed to appear at the commission’s office at 11:30 am on March 12.The notice states that Khaira made a comment after being abetted by the PPCC President. The letters to the Kapurthala SSP seek a probe by a SP-rank officer and submit a report to the commission.Khaira’s comment has generated heat in the ongoing assembly session where the AAP, led by women MLAs, criticised the MLA.Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema targeted the Congress, calling it anti-Dalit and anti-women.
