Congress’ Kapurthala MLA on Tuesday said the Rs 15, 377 crore reserved for the Agriculture sector by the AAP government in its Budget reflected “agrarian distress”.Addressing the House, the Congress MLA took on the state government for having a “myopic view” of agriculture.“The water table is falling drastically but there is no roadmap in the Budget to stem the fall. Punjab can be saved only if its groundwater and its agriculture is saved,” he said, adding that Rs 7,715 crore kept for power subsidy would be better utilised if given to farmers for shifting from the water guzzling paddy.“The government should have promoted maize, cash crops like sugar beet and cassava,” he said.Rana Gurjeet also pointed out that the state was facing an acute shortage of storage space for wheat and rice as large quantities of grain from previous seasons were already lying in warehouses.“A permanent solution to the storage crisis lies in crop diversification,” he added, while warning that the problem could become severe when the wheat crop starts arriving in mandis from April 1.He also recommended the use of rice to make ethanol, saying it would help the state get additional GST revenue.
