Hundreds of schoolchildren on their way to appear for their board examination and office-goers were caught in a huge traffic jam in Patiala today, allegedly due to the laxity of the Public Works Department (PWD).The delay made students anxious, some of whom were in tears, while their parents demanded strict action against the authorities concerned. As the PWD has started repair work on the busiest flyover Number 22 here, a truck from Rajasthan carrying construction material for PWD was parked on the road leading to a huge traffic jam.In a state of panic, some parents were seen taking their children on foot to the other side of the flyover and requesting commuters there to drop them to exam centres.A student said, “It’s already 9 am — the time when my exam was scheduled to start. I’m still her and it will take at least 10 minutes to reach school if we are able to leave now.”As it was prime time for students, the truck parked on the flyover led to chaos on both sides, creating a bottleneck. The traffic police was nowhere to be seen.“How can someone park in the middle of a flyover at peak time of commuting? Accountability has to be fixed,” said Sukhdeep Singh, who got late in dropping his daughter for her final exam.Another car occupant said that this 10-minute journey to school had taken him half an hour only due to the wrongly parked PWD truck. “The DC and the SSP should act against the PWD and traffic wing,” said a parent who was visibly perturbed.PWD XEN Piyush Aggarwal said that he was unaware of the truck being parked on the flyover, but would look into the matter.Traffic incharge Japnam Singh said that he had already requested the PWD to start the work after the peak rush hour. When questioned how a loaded truck was allowed to enter the city during peak hours, he had no satisfactory reply.Patiala Deputy Commisisoner Varjeet Walia did not respond to calls on his mobile.
