National Conference president and former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah escaped unhurt when a gunman fired at him from point-blank range at a wedding function in Jammu on Wednesday.Officials said the accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, was overpowered by security personnel and handed over to the police. The incident occurred in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Nasir Aslam Wani, adviser to the J&K Chief Minister, were also present there. After the incident, Chaudhary told reporters that everyone was safe but said no one from the local police had been deployed for security.“One should ask the police how such a big lapse happened,” he said.A video of the incident showed a man coming from behind while Farooq and others were leaving the venue.Later, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah posted on X that his father “had a close shave” and the protection team of Farooq “deflected the shot and ensured that the assassination attempt failed”.“Allah is kind. My father had a close shave. The details are sketchy at the moment, but what is known is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within point-blank range and discharge a shot. It was only the protection team that deflected the shot and ensured that the assassination attempt failed. There are more questions than answers at the moment, including but not limited to how someone was able to get this close to a Z+ NSG-protected former CM,” he said, adding that the Deputy CM and Wani were also safe.
