Akal Takht acting Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj has condemned the alleged high-handedness of the Panjab University administration and the Chandigarh Police against Sikh students during a recent protest on the campus. He also alleged disrespect toward turbans and Sikh articles of faith during the police action. The controversy arose on March 9 during a seminar on the life and philosophy of Guru Tegh Bahadur organised at the varsity to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the Sikh Guru. Some student groups objected to the presence of a functionary associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as the chief guest, alleging that a political ideology was being promoted at the event. The police intervened and detained several students. Gargaj said if students had objections regarding the event, it was the responsibility of the university administration to listen to their concerns rather than resorting to coercive measures. He claimed the university administration had approached him a few days earlier to help resolve the issue. “I had suggested a solution. However, instead of adopting a constructive approach, the university administration acted arbitrarily,” he added. Gargaj alleged the Chandigarh Police struck Sikh students on their chests with batons, removed their turbans and disrespected their articles of faith.
