Amid rising tensions in West Asia and concerns over maritime security, Iran has assured that Indian vessels will receive safe passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, describing India as a “friend” with shared regional interests.Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Iran’s Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali said Tehran recognised India’s importance and would facilitate unhindered navigation for its ships.“Yes, because India is our friend. You will see it within two or three hours. We believe that Iran and India share common interests in the region,” Fathali said after attending the International Quds Day Conference in the National Capital. The assurance comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz—through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes—has emerged as a major concern for India’s energy security amid the ongoing regional conflict.Fathali said high-level discussions between Indian and Iranian officials had taken place recently and expressed optimism that obstacles affecting bilateral cooperation would be resolved soon.“We have a good relationship with the Government of India. All high-ranking officials held discussions yesterday… We have tried our best to resolve the problems and you will hear good news in the near future,” he said. The envoy also referred to the recent conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, describing it as “a good conversation” focused on efforts to ease tensions.Fathali reiterated Tehran’s stance that it does not seek conflict but would defend itself if required. “Iran does not want war, but Iran is ready for it if necessary,” he said, adding that negotiations with the United States had earlier resumed but were later disrupted.Highlighting the broader relationship, the ambassador said India and Iran share “common faith and common interests” in the region, and both governments were working to deepen cooperation despite the current geopolitical challenges.
