A National Lok Adalat held at the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday saw the settlement of 225 cases with an award amount totalling Rs 9,44,18,296, largely in motor accident claim matters, as part of a nationwide initiative of the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA).The Lok Adalat was organised by the High Court Legal Services Committee (HCLSC) under the overall supervision of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Patron-in-Chief of the committee, and Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, its Chairman.Five Lok Adalat benches were constituted for the exercise, which collectively took up 439 cases for consideration. Out of these, 225 matters were disposed of through mutual settlement, reflecting a settlement rate of more than 50 per cent.The Lok Adalat benches were headed by Justice Sandeep Moudgil, Justice Sudeepti Sharma, Justice Deepinder Singh Nalwa, Justice Ramesh Kumari and Justice Ramesh Chander Dimri.HCLSC Secretary Swati Sehgal said efforts would continue to identify more matters for settlement in future Lok Adalats so that a larger number of disputes could be resolved through the mechanism.
