The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the order providing appointment on compassionate grounds to 34 persons, who were relatives of those killed in 2018 Dasehra train tragedy in Amritsar.The High Court has directed the petitioner to deposit Rs 10,000 as cost with the Poor Patients Welfare Fund of the PGIMER, Chandigarh.This PIL was filed seeking quashing of the order, dated July 25, 2021. The order was issued by the Under Secretary (Personnel), Punjab.Through it, 34 relatives of those killed in tragedy were given jobs.The Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry asked a pointed question to the counsel for the petitioner as to how a service dispute could be raised by way of a PIL.The counsel said this was not a service dispute and that the decision of the state government was being challenged.On October 19, 2018, around 60 people were killed and 71 injured when a train ploughed into a crowd watching the burning of a Ravana effigy on Dasehra at Jaura Phatak near Amritsar.
