With the growing global influence of Indian cinema – and OTT films, we all did expect at least one film to be nominated from our country. However, none made it to the final cut. Here’s what happened, and why:Only five nominations are announced out of 80 countries: ‘Homebound’ was India’s official submission for the Best International Feature category, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. It tells the story of two childhood friends – both from different religions – dreaming to earn respect and dignity by clearing exams for the post of ‘police constable’.Their tough journey of survival discrimination during the Covid pandemic has been highlighted, in a very subtle yet sad manner. Since only five nominations are announced out of about 80 countries, ‘Homebound’ could not stand the test of waters. Oscars 2026 had high competitive films which had strong festival runs and global attention.Visibility in the US: Does this mean that ‘Homebound’ wasn’t appreciated globally? No. Films that receive visibility and attention in the United States, usually make it to the Oscars. However, In December 2025, it was one of the 15 films shortlisted for the 98th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film award.Expensive Oscars campaigns: Films that make it to the Oscars have extensive and very expensive promotional campaigns. It takes a lot of grit to reach there, and even harder if you’re from outside of the United States.
