In view of the current LPG shortage, HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) has increased LPG output at its Guru Gobind Singh Refinery here from 1,000 tonnes to 3,000 tonnes per day to ease supply pressure. This was recently announced by leading industrialist Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, executive chairman of ArcelorMittal. The move has come in response to directions from the central government asking oil refineries to ramp up LPG production and divert additional output for domestic consumption. The LPG shortage is causing major problems for residents, with reports from several districts indicating a rush for cylinders. A 66-year-old man from Barnala district even lost his life last week after suffering a cardiac arrest while waiting for his turn to get a domestic LPG cylinder outside a gas agency.Notably, the refinery supplies LPG not only to Punjab but also to neighbouring states and Union Territories (UTs), including Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh. The enhanced output is expected to provide some respite to LPG users, sources said.
