The suspension of eight Opposition Members of Parliament — Congress’s Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, B Manickam Tagore, Prashant Yadaorao Padole and Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, and CPM’s S Venkatesan – will be revoked after they met Speaker Om Birla and pledged to maintain the dignity of the House. The MPs were suspended from the House for the remainder of the Session beginning February 3 on a motion moved by the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and adopted by the House.”The MPs will have their suspension revoked following a consensus reached during a meeting convened under the chairmanship of the Speaker, Lok Sabha, with Leaders of parties in the Lok Sabha.During the meeting, it was agreed to uphold the dignity and established traditions of Parliament. The leaders collectively decided that no Member from either side would approach the opposite side in the Well of the House, tear papers and throw them towards the Chair, or climb on the officials’ table inside the House,” sources said. They said there was further consensus that all members would adhere to the established decorum and traditions of Parliament, and that both sides would ensure such incidents are not repeated. The suspension followed the protests by these MPs after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was prevented from speaking on a report regarding former Army chief General MM Naravane (retd)’s book in the House. The Speaker had said that Gandhi could not quote from an unpublished book.
