A Punjabi short-story collection titled “Safety Kit” by Jalandhar-based writer Jinder has won the Sahitya Akademi Award for 2025.The collection focuses on the experiences of Punjabis living abroad and explores themes such as migration, insecurity and the psychological impact of life in foreign countries. One of the stories centres on Jaspreet, a young woman navigating fear and safety while living overseas.Published by Navyug Publishers, the book had earlier won the Dhahan Prize in 2024. The Ministry of Culture announced the Sahitya Akademi Awards for works in 24 Indian languages on Monday. The awards include eight poetry collections, four novels, six short-story collections, two essay works, an autobiography and two memoirs.English writer and former diplomat Navtej Sarna has been honoured for his novel “Crimson Spring”, while Hindi author Mamta Kalia will receive the award for her memoir “Jeete Jee Allahabad”.Other winners include Prasun Bandyopadhyay (Bengali), Yogesh Vaidya (Gujarati), Amresh Nugadoni (Kannada), N Prabhakaran (Malayalam), Raju Baviskar (Marathi), Jitender Kumar Soni (Rajasthani) and Sa Tamilselvan (Tamil). The award carries an engraved copper plaque, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. It will be presented in New Delhi on March 31.
