Political circles in Delhi today buzzed with talks of whether Varun Gandhi, the long cold-shouldered former party MP from Pilibhit, is back in the reckoning.Reason: Varun Gandhi got an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. The son of late Sanjay Gandhi and former minister Maneka Gandhi posted the pictures on X, with the frame capturing the PM, himself, his wife Yamini Roy Chowdhury and daughter Anasuyaa in a happy mood.The picture immediately set off the buzz around Varun Gandhi’s possible return to the BJP mainstream after he was sidelined in 2024 Lok Sabha polls.At the time the BJP had fielded former Congress leader Jitin Prasad (who had crossed over to the BJP) from Pilibhit, replacing Varun from the seat which his mother Maneka had vacated for him in 2019 LS polls. Varun had won that election.Varun had invited the BJP’s wrath for a series of critical tweets starting with the posts on the farmers’ deaths in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in October of 2021.Gandhi had earlier attacked the government and BJP on unemployment, on vacant government positions and a variety of policy moves of the Centre including the gaps in the flagship Ujjwala scheme. He had also used critical remarks for the government’s free ration scheme arguing that free ration was not the replacement for joblessness. He even said slogans like Jai Shri Ram and Bharat Mata ki Jai won’t solve problems.Varun was at the time also seen with cousin Rahul Gandhi at Kedarnath amid talks of his possible Congress entry. That did not materialise.
