Political circles in Delhi were abuzz on Tuesday over whether Varun Gandhi, the cold-shouldered former BJP MP from Pilibhit, was back in the reckoning. The buzz followed Varun’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by his wife, Yamini Roy Chowdhury, and daughter, Anasuyaa. He later posted a picture on X, triggering speculation about a possible thaw in his ties with the party.Varun has been sidelined since he was denied a Lok Sabha ticket in 2024 from Pilibhit, a constituency traditionally represented by his mother, Maneka Gandhi. The BJP instead fielded former Congress leader Jitin Prasad from the seat, and he went on to win. At the time, Varun had drawn the party’s ire over a series of posts on issues such as farmers’ deaths in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence of October 2021, unemployment, vacant government posts, the flagship Ujjwala scheme and the free ration programme. He had also said people wanted jobs, not free rations, and questioned whether slogans like “Jai Shri Ram” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” would address people’s problems. The former MP at that time was also spotted with his cousin Rahul Gandhi in Kedarnath amid speculation of a possible entry into the Congress, though that never materialised.
