The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has rolled out a fresh outreach campaign offering undocumented immigrants, including Indians, free flights to their home countries along with an exit bonus of $2,600 for those opting to leave voluntarily.The initiative, part of the “Project Homecoming” programme, is being promoted through social media posters featuring iconic global landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, alongside visuals from China and Colombia, in a bid to target migrant communities from these regions.In its messaging, the DHS has urged immigrants without legal status to “go home with a fresh start”, promising federally funded travel and financial assistance for those who self-deport using the Customs and Border Protection Home application.Officials said the scheme was designed to provide a “safe and orderly” alternative to forced deportation, allowing individuals to return as regular travellers without detention or legal penalties typically associated with removal proceedings.According to DHS data, over 2.2 million undocumented immigrants have availed of the voluntary departure programme since its launch in 2025.The financial incentive, currently set at $2,600, has been periodically revised, from an initial $1,000 to higher amounts during peak periods, as part of efforts to encourage wider participation.The move comes amid a broader immigration crackdown by the Donald Trump administration, which has increasingly relied on voluntary repatriation as a cost-effective alternative to enforcement-led deportations.
