Haryana Police DGP Ajay Singhal on Saturday launched ‘Abhedya’ app, the first of its kind in India, to block suspicious threat calls, extortion messages, stalking, and harmful digital content before they reach the user.Singhal narrowly avoided becoming a victim of a digital arrest scam. Recently, he received a call displaying the picture of a police inspector. When he answered, the caller told him that there was an arrest warrant against him. However, he soon realised that the call was originating from Pakistan, as the number began with the +92 country code.“When I pointed out that the call was from Pakistan, the caller immediately disconnected, but not before hurling expletives that I cannot repeat,” said Singhal during a press briefing. He also shared that his wife received a similar call. “She brought the phone to me, saying that a ‘police officer is calling repeatedly and it must be for you’. I told her not to answer the call, as it was from Pakistan.”The app launch comes at a time when the state recorded 178 extortion calls in 2024 and 107 in 2025.Also Read: Haryana Police launch ‘Abhedya’ app to block extortion calls, threat messagesThe app monitors incoming WhatsApp calls and messages from unknown numbers. It checks whether the number is an unsaved international number (genuine or virtual) or a virtual Indian number. If found suspicious, the system immediately rejects the call, blocks the number, and removes the notification, voice note or chat from the user’s phone.
