Anaya Bangar, the daughter of former Indian cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar, on Saturday announced the successful completion of her gender-affirming surgery in Thailand. In an Instagram post, Anaya shared that while the transition was a challenging process for her family, it has culminated in a period of growth and gratitude. She specifically highlighted the role of her father, Sanjay Bangar, noting that while his support was not instant, it evolved to become “real, unconditional, and strong”.Reports indicate that the former India all-rounder accompanied his daughter to Bangkok and personally covered the costs of the procedure.Prior to her transition, Anaya was a rising talent in the cricketing circuit. She followed in her father’s footsteps as a left-handed batter, representing Mumbai at the Under-16 level and participating in trials for Pondicherry and the English county circuit with Leicestershire. However, the physical changes brought about by hormone replacement therapy — which Anaya described as a “second puberty” — resulted in a 95 per cent loss of former muscle mass, significantly altering her athletic profile.Anaya has had to step away from the sport due to current International Cricket Council (ICC) and ECB regulations, which prohibit transgender women who have undergone any stage of male puberty from competing in elite women’s domestic cricket. Now a trans-rights advocate, Anaya is using her platform to call for evidence-based inclusion policies that account for the physiological realities of medical transitions.“Growth takes time. Love takes time,” Anaya concluded in her message. “But when it comes, it’s worth everything.”
