US President Donald Trump has said Washington is in active negotiations with Iran, even as he made a series of striking claims about recent developments, including what he described as a “very big” oil and gas-related concession from Tehran. This came as he spoke to Pakistan field marshal Asim Munir amid growing speculation that Pakistan could become the venue for dialogue between the warring parties.Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif also threw his hat in the ring, offering to host talks. “Pakistan welcomes and fully supports ongoing efforts to pursue dialogue to end the war in the Middle East, in the interest of peace and stability in the region and beyond… Pakistan stands ready and honoured to be the host,” Sharif posted on X. Soon after, Trump shared a screengrab of Sharif’s post on his Truth Social platform, a move seen in diplomatic circles as an endorsement of Islamabad’s proposal.US media suggested that Vice-President JD Vance could emerge as the chief negotiator if talks with Tehran materialised. The White House, however, has neither confirmed Vance’s prospective role in the peace talks nor speculation that Pakistan could host the talks.Speaking at the White House, Trump said multiple senior officials, including Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, were involved in talks with Tehran.Trump referred to a “present” allegedly given by Iran. “They did something yesterday that was amazing. They gave us a present… a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money. I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was oil and gas related,” he said, without offering details. The US President asserted that Washington was “talking to the right people”, even as he claimed that Iran’s leadership structure had been significantly weakened.Meanwhile, Iran Ambassador to India Mohammed Fathali dismissed Trump’s recent calls for dialogue as a “tactic to manipulate markets”.“According to Iranian officials, there are currently no negotiations underway with the United States, neither direct nor indirect. The claim made by Donald Trump on social media appears to be aimed more at manipulating financial and oil markets and escaping the difficult situation in which the US and Israel find themselves. We neither fear Trump’s 48-hour ultimatum nor consider his calls for talks to be genuine,” Fathali told news agency ANI.
