Lakhs of voters in West Bengal whose names are omitted from the first supplementary list of electors under adjudication, released late on March 23, may be unable to vote in the forthcoming Assembly elections, according to highly placed sources. The eagerly awaited list, however, does not spell out the number of voters under adjudication whose names have been removed from it.The state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal told mediapersons in Kolkata that around 29 lakh out of the 60 lakh voters, who had been put under adjudication after completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the poll-bound state, have been reviewed till date. He did not divulge the number of voters removed from the list.Earlier this month, after an initial scrutiny of 10 lakh such voters, around 3 lakh names were removed from the voters’ list. There are 60.06 lakh voters who are placed under adjudication in the state, of which 29 lakh have been scrutinised till date. Sources privy to details said roughly 3 lakh names were rejected from the first 10 lakh such voters.Sources further said that voters whose names do not appear in the final electoral rolls after the SIR can apply for inclusion till the last date of nomination. However, those whose cases have been rejected during adjudication will have to apply afresh as new voters. The catch, however, here is that if such applicants submit the same set of documents that led to their rejection during adjudication, their applications are likely to be rejected again, and they will not be able to vote in the upcoming Assembly elections, sources told this newspaper. With around 3 lakh rejections recorded in the initial phase, this number could rise further as adjudication process of all the 60 lakh electors is completed. Voters reapplying after rejection will need to furnish fresh documentation to be considered. On February 28, following the completion of the SIR exercise, the final electoral rolls in West Bengal excluded around 61.78 lakh voters, while another 60.06 lakh were placed under adjudication.
