The All India Radio (AIR) has begun airing the full six-stanza version of Vande Mataram, replacing the traditional two-stanza format, in line with new government guidelines.Officials said that in addition to the primary version, the full six-stanza composition is also being recorded in multiple regional formats.Since Independence, it has been a tradition for Akashvani stations to open their morning broadcast with their iconic signature tune, followed by the two-stanza version of Vande Mataram. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that following a recent guideline from the Ministry of Home Affairs specifying all six stanzas, all stations of Akashvani will start broadcasting the full version of the National Song from Friday. The full version has a duration of 3 minutes and 10 seconds. The initial version to be broadcast is sung by renowned Hindi classical vocalist Pt Chandrashekhar Vaze in Raag Des.The Ministry added that regional versions are being recorded to showcase musical diversity, and Akashvani stations in respective states will adopt these versions. Authorities further said that additional renditions are being produced using region-specific instruments and musical styles.Earlier, on February 11, the Centre issued comprehensive guidelines establishing the official protocol for performing Vande Mataram at government functions. The directives specify how and when the national song should be performed and outline expected audience conduct, especially concerning the national anthem. The new directives are intended to formalise the status and ceremonial role of the national song in public and official events across the country, placing greater emphasis on its observance during state functions and institutional gatherings.
