An ‘alliance’ between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress has secured a decisive victory in the re-elections for the chairman and vice-chairman posts of the Baghapurana Block Samiti on Saturday. The elections, conducted under the strict supervision of a court-appointed commission, saw Sarabjit Kaur (AAP) elected as chairman and Charanjit Kaur (Congress) as vice-chairman.The alliance managed to secure a majority in a closely contested battle against the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). While the AAP and Congress jointly got 14 votes, SAD secured 12 votes.Following directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the voting process took place at the Moga Deputy Commissioner’s office. To ensure the proceedings remain peaceful, the district administration deployed a large number of police personnel at the venue.Elections for the posts were earlier held on March 17. However, due to certain disputes and controversies during that round, the authorities decided to conduct a fresh poll.A total of 26 elected members of the block samiti were eligible to participate in this election. Which include 13 elected members of SAD, eight of AAP, three of Congress, one independent, and one vote of a local MLA.The re-election was triggered by a legal battle following the initial polls held on March 17.During the March 17 elections, SAD and Congress members accused the ruling AAP government of preventing their members from voting. Despite the outcry, AAP had declared its candidates victorious.Challenging the “undemocratic” process, the Shiromani Akali Dal members moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking a fresh and fair. The case gained further attention when the then-SDM wrote to the Punjab Chief Secretary, alleging pressure from the Moga Deputy Commissioner—a letter that went viral on social media. After summoning SDM Babandeep Singh Walia, the High Court ordered the administration to conduct fresh elections on March 28 under neutral monitoring and full videography.MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand hailed the victory as a validation of the previous results. “Sarabjit Kaur had won on March 17 as well. Today’s transparent process proves that the allegations leveled by the opposition were entirely baseless,” he stated.Moga Deputy Commissioner Sagar Setia confirmed that the process was completed peacefully. “Following the High Court’s directives, the election was conducted with 25 members and the local MLA casting their votes. The entire process was recorded to ensure complete transparency,” Setia said.
